Sam currently operates the WV&W out of the Hudson Model Railroad Club in Hudson, PA.
About the Prototype:
Built by the Berwick Forge and Fabricating Corporation between 1976 and 1977, the large 7580 cubic foot boxcar has served the appliance industry for decades. The ExactRail® Platinum HO Scale Berwick 7580 Boxcar features accurate prototype details like a narrow-style draft box with shank wedges striker castings, fully decorated with nuts and bolts; a separately applied brake wheel; etched Apex coupler crossover platforms; see through lower door tracks; and wire drop style grab irons on the car sides. The boxcar also rides atop highly-detailed 70-ton ASF Ride Control trucks.
It may look like it’s built for carrying auto parts, but these large 70-ton, 60' high-cube boxcars are for moving appliances. Initially the kind that paired nicely with dark walnut veneer cabinets, orange formica and freshly raked shag carpet. The cars were built and delivered between 1976 & 1977 by the Berwick Forge and Fabricating Corporation in the former AC&F Berwick, Pennsylvania plant.
Initially delivered to the Louisville & Nashville, Rock Island and Missouri Pacific railroads, many of these cars found themselves wearing multiple different paint schemes during their lifetime. Many of the L&N cars would be painted into Seaboard and later CSX colors, but many never were and lived on in their former glory. The former Rock Island cars found themselves on the Southern and were given what was called the “Europa” paint scheme. The few MP cars that have lasted up to today on the Union Pacific can still be seen roaming the rails in their as-delivered paint.
