A Limited Edition Rapido Trains PC&F 5258 50' Double Door Box Car painted for freelance model railroad Benton and Southern! Road Number Variant: BSR 5823.
The Benton and Southern is the freelance model railroad of Brian Sopke. If you follow the Benton and Southern on social media you will see that there is a relationship between the Benton and Southern and the Arkansas Valley. The Home Shops BSR B-70-69 boxcar exemplifies this relationship as these cars are designed to represent shopped and repainted AV cars.
The colorful LeCain Railcar decal and the replacement Superior Doors provide some clues to this arrangement. Representing a 50-car lot, BSR 5800-BSR 5849, these brilliant red, yellow, and black boxcars will be a beautiful addition to your rolling stock fleet!
As the demand grew in the 70s for larger capacity boxcars, along with the need to replace aging 40’ cars, this series of 50’ double door boxes was produced by PC&F between 1972 and 1975. These boxcars are 50’-7” in length with a capacity of either 5258 cu ft for standard cars, or 5119 cu ft for those equipped for DF (Damage Free) Loading. All B-70 boxcars feature Hydra-Cushion underframes and were delivered with either Youngstown or Superior doors.
The PC&F 5258 is an amazing car for freelance application! Many freelance model railroads handle paper products at one end of the journey from origin to destination. This car type also could plausibly have been used in general merchandise service hauling any of a wide variety of commodities.
