About the Superior Transfer
The Superior Transfer (STRC) concept was started in 2002 when my wife and I visited the Twin Ports. I immediately fell in love with that area. Once I learned more about the operations and history of the Duluth, Winnipeg & Pacific (DW&P); Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range (DM&IR) and Wisconsin Central (WC), I thought this would be a great Freelance Railroad. But what would I call it? I bounced a few ideas off of friends and landed with Superior Transfer. The name was derived from an old switching railroad in the Twin Ports called the Lake Superior Terminal & Transfer.
The Superior Transfer was incorporated in 1990 by acquiring the DW&P and WC between Fort Frances, ON and Chicago. The STRC was mainly created as a bridge line between Chicago and Western Canada. There is also a Trackage rights agreement with CN to run into Symington Yard in Winnipeg, MB. The Mainline runs 855 miles over 6 districts with various branch lines. The main base of Operations is located at Pokegama Yard in Superior, WI. The traffic mainly consists of Automobiles, Forest Products, Potash, Grain, Oil, LPG and Coal. The STRC rosters mostly 2nd hand EMD/GMD Locomotives with a few MLW's and GE's mixed in.
The layout is modeled in September of 1995. The basement size is 28' X 48' and the layout will take up all of it. When completed it will be 3 levels. Currently only the bottom level with Kelly Yard in Chicago and a large staging yard are partially completed (no scenery). There is also a long 4% grade leading to the second level. That's as far as I have gotten so far. The original track plan will now be revised because I just acquired a large 16' long 4 track Ore Dock modeled after Dock 6 in Duluth, MN plus a full-size HO scale model of the Edmund Fitzgerald. I know my era is not correct for this boat, but it was built by a close friend and I can't bear to change the name. Now the DM&IR will be incorporated into the layout.
